Canagliflozin and dehydration – my experience and hydration tips

I started Canagliflozin 100 mg a day for glucose control a few months back. Right after the first week I noticed a big jump in how often I had to visit the loo – about four to six times in 24 hrs. The first few days I felt light‑headed, especially on long drives, and my mouth stayed dry.

I found that drinking water as soon as I woke up and keeping a bottle handy kept the dizziness down,Terminally I started taking a small electrolyte powder with a glass of water each morning. After a week my thirst was back to normal and the dizziness vanished. I got my blood work done at the GP – BUN, creatinine and electrolytes were all within the normal range, but my potassium was on the lower side, so I added a modest potassium‑rich smoothie once a week.

If anyone else has been on Canagliflozin, does anyone have a hydration routine that keeps the dehydration flag down? How do you decide when to tweak the dose or add supplements?

  • hank_m: Tbh i tried a low dose of canagliflozin a while back for the same glucose thing and noticed the extra bathroom trips too, especially after coffee in the morning i found sipping water with a pinch of sea salt and a splash of lemon helped keep the light‑headed feeling at bay, i also started eating a banana or a handful of dried apricots most days to top up potassium and after a couple of weeks the thirst settled down to normal, for me the key was spreading fluid intake through the day rather than
  • kayla_s: I’ve been doing the same thing – splitting my water up into 8‑oz sips throughout the day and mixing in a little sea salt or a pinch of potassium‑rich fruit when I have coffee. I tried taking the dose with lunch instead of breakfast, but didn’t notice a big change in bathroom trips. Did you find a particular meal that worked best for you?
  • hank_m: Tbh i’ve been on canagliflozin for a bit and the water‑dehydration dance is real, i.e. The more you urinate the more you gotta drink, or else the dizziness can turn into a real trip, especially on the motorway, so i set a 500 ml bottle on my nightstand and top it up each time i wake, then sip a half scegli of electrolytes twice a day – once in the morning, once before bed, just to keep potassium steady, i keep a banana in my lunch box for a quick hit, i skip the big coffee before 6 pm to reduce
  • ivy_mobility: Yeah the extra trips to the loo can sneak up on you, I found a 500 ml bottle by the bed helped too, plus a pinch of salt in water each morning kept my BP steady. Do you track your weight daily or just every other day?
  • robin616: I’ve tried taking it at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but my bathroom trips stayed pretty much the same. I think the spread‑out sipping is more important than the exact timing. Did you notice any change when you shifted the dose to right before a meal? 🔥
  • greg208: I ended up trying the “before‑meal” idea last month, but my trips stayed the same as when it was just 100 mg daily. I think the fluid intake really matters – I make a rule to sip a bottle of water all day, not just at mealtimes. Have you mixed in an electrolyte powder with that, or just plain water?
  • greg208: I don’t weigh daily – I stick to a twice‑a‑week routine on the same morning, usually before breakfast. Not gonna lie I’ve noticed the scale shifts a bit in the first month, so I’ve added gangster daily logs for the first 28 days to catch any trend, then go back to the biquiera schedule. About the salt, I’ve tried a pinch, but I end up topping the shaker a tad because the potassium drip in the smoothie isn’t cutting it. What do you think about tweaking the electrolytes?
  • greg208: About the 500 ml bottle by the nightstand – that works for me too. I’ll add a banana to lunch now and start checking my weight every other day as you do. What brand of electrolyte powder do you use for the morning and pre‑bed sip? Also, does the single‑gram‑per‑day drop trigger you to upping fluid intake or add a potassium snack?
  • greg208: I’ve stuck to breakfast the whole time, mainly because the first dose shows up quickest in the gut and I want to catch the glucose spike before it happens. I didn’t see a big shift when I moved it to lunch – maybe the larger mid‑day meal just makes the sweat hits smoother. I do notice the bathroom trips drop a tad if I eat a protein‑rich breakfast like eggs or a Greek‑style yoghurt; the protein seems to blunt the diuretic kick a bit. Maybe give it a try and see if the protein‑packed start does h
  • greg208: Thanks for the tip, hank_m. I’ve been taking it with breakfast but haven’t mixed it with meals yet – might see a difference. Your pinch of sea salt and lemon sounds spot on, I’ll try that. Also the banana idea is great; I’ll add a dried apricot on the walk after lunch. Not gonna lie, the light‑headedness was a bit scary, so any trick that keeps it steady is welcome.
