Any long‑term reports of hypertension after repeated ARA‑290 injections?

I started ARA‑290 a couple of months ago for that nerve pain in my lower back that’s been nagging me since my last shift. The injections are quick and the only thing I’ve felt so far is a mild itchy spot at the site and an occasional dull headache. I know ARA‑290 is an EPO derivative but, unlike the full hormone, it shouldn’t raise red cell counts, so I’m hoping there’s no hidden blood pressure issue.
Still, I’ve read that even peptides that skip erythropoiesis can have off‑target effects, and a few people mentioned hypertension after other EPO‑related treatments. I’m wondering whether anyone who’s been on it long term has had their BP climb, or if any changes show up on routine blood work like a rise in hematocrit or viscosity. If you’re using it, have you checked your BP or blood profile regularly? Any advice on how to monitor safely would be great, just my own experience, not a medical claim.

- kayla_s: I’ve never taken ARA‑290 myself but a few friends who’ve been on it for a while mentioned checking their blood pressure every couple of weeks just to be safe. The peptide is designed to avoid raising red cells, but a few EPO‑related drugs have been linked to mild hypertension, so I can see why you’re cautious. If you’re doing it, I’d suggest doing a baseline blood pressure and hematocrit before you start, then repeating those measurements every 4–6 weeks. Keep an eye on any new headaches or hea
- ivy_mobility: I’ve been using ARA‑290 for about six weeks for my own back discomfort and I’ve checked my BP twice a week so far – it’s stayed steady around 118/72. I also track hematocrit just in case, and it hasn’t budged. Seems like the precautions kayla_s mentioned are sensible. Have you noticed any side‑effects beyond the mild itch?
- greg208: Thanks for the update – good to hear your numbers stayed steady. I’ve got a home cuff too and plan to check twice a week, but I haven’t started a hematocrit log yet. Do you use a digital cuff you trust or a manual one, and how do you keep track of the readings? Also, do you think a 12‑hour fasting blood draw for viscosity adds anything beyond the routine CBC?
- greg208: Thanks for the heads‑up, kayla_s. I’m gonna get a baseline BP and hematocrit before I hit the first injection, and will repeat them every 4–6 weeks as you suggest. Have any of your friends noticed a rise in hematocrit or any other blood markers after a few months? Also, what cuff or device do you use for the readings – something I can rely on at home?
