FDA Considers Re‑approval of Research Peptides

The New York Times ran a piece about an FDA committee that might lift a ban on certain research peptides, saying regulators are “considering use in medical research and potentially in clinical trials.” It notes that these compounds have been popular in clinics, on TikTok, and among biohackers, but the FDA still has plenty of doubts about safety and efficacy.

I’m skeptical. The article frames the FDA’s hesitation as a “step back” when the data on these peptides are often still in mice or very early phase human studies. In my writing I've seen people boom into these injections hoping for anti‑aging or mood lifts, but the science doesn’t back it up yet. The piece also glosses over the fact that many of the labs pushing this are not the FDA‑approved ones, so we’re left with a patchwork of quality control. If the FDA does release a conditional approval, it could open the door to a lot of gray‑market activity, something we’ve already seen with other compounds.
