Scientific American piece on whether retatrutide's speed of loss is actually a problem

The Sci Am article is worth a read, it's basically asking the question I've been sitting with since TRIUMPH-1 dropped. 28.3% loss in 80 weeks sounds amazing on paper, but they're pointing out the rate itself might be the issue, not just the total. Muscle loss, metabolic adaptation, what happens to someone when they lose 70 pounds that fast and their body wasn't ready for it.

Honestly this is the stuff nobody in the hype train wants to talk about. Everyone wants the number, fewer people ask what the journey looks like in month 4 when you're eating 900 calories a day and your HRV is in the basement. From my own run I know the scale moving fast and feeling good are two completely different things.

Did anyone else reading this catch the part about whether the loss rate tracks more like bariatric outcomes or just looks like it on the final number? Because those are not the same conversation.

  • quiet_ironman: This is the question I've been wrestling with too. The total weight loss number gets all the attention but the speed is its own animal, like you said. My concern is always what happens to the person who isn't supervised, isn't lifting heavy, isn't eating enough protein to protect what they've got. The studies track body composition pretty closely but real world use is a different story, people just don't get the same support structure. The bariatric comparison is interesting and kind of unsettl
  • tiredmira: Yeah that's the thing that bugs me too, supervised vs unsupervised worlds are just different conversations. The bariatric parallel especially, they screen you psychologically, you meet with a dietitian for months before, and there's still a chunk of people who regain or end up with malnutrition issues long term. Retatrutide gets discussed like it's plug and play 😅
  • elle_z: Yeah the bariatric parallel is what got me too. Like they have dietitians, psych screens, the whole pipeline, and even then people end up with loose skin, hair shedding, energy crashes months in. If someone DIY's reta at home with zero oversight, month 3-4 is going to be rough. Are you watching any of the telehealth clinics that prescribe it?
