FDA cracking down on telehealth GLP-1 ads, worth watching for everyone on a stack

AP has a piece on the FDA sending warning letters to telehealth outfits and to the GLP-1 manufacturers themselves over that 2024 Oprah infomercial. The agency is calling the 42 minute segment misleading and going after platforms like Hims for the way they push GLP-1s on TV. Worth reading the actual letters if you can find them, since the language matters more than the headlines.

My take is this has been coming for a while. Telehealth made access easy, but a lot of the marketing crossed the line from education into straight up hype. I do not love the government picking winners, though. If they go after the telehealth ads, the next question is whether compounding pharmacies get dragged in next, which would hit a lot of people currently on a stack.

How is everyone reading this? Overdue cleanup, or the start of something that makes access way harder for the rest of us?

  • vet_skeptical: To be fair the oprah thing was never gonna fly forever, 42 minutes of pushing glp-1s with zero nuance is a lawsuit magnet. Fda is slow but they do eventually show up. The compounding question is the real one though. If they squeeze telehealth AND knock out compounding next, suddenly a lot of people paying reasonable prices are looking at brand name only. That is not a cleanup, that is a wall. I am also a little skeptical this stays targeted. Once agencies get a letter template they like, they
  • weekendnate: The "letter template" point is exactly what worries me. I have seen how regulatory momentum works and it rarely stops at the obvious target. Hims has lawyers to handle this. The small telehealth clinic operating out of a strip mall in Ohio probably does not. The compounding angle is what would actually hurt. If that goes, the cost difference is not marginal, it is multiples. Are you seeing any chatter about which pharmacies are already tightening up?
