The NYT ran a piece on China's national longevity project, the "immortality islands," the grape seed pills, the whole spectacle. Worth a read because it lays out how much state money is flowing into this space, and how much of the actual science behind the marketed stuff is thin.
My take: the cultural angle is fun, but the bigger story is how uncritically a lot of the public is treating longevity research right now. GLP-1s get lumped in with grapeseed extract and some folk herb cocktail, and suddenly it's all "anti-aging." Real aging biology is moving, slowly, and most of the loud claims aren't where the real progress is. I want to see the actual trial data, not a TED talk.
What about you, do you think the longevity space is getting better or worse at separating signal from noise right now?
