ScienceDaily covered a study presented at FENS in Barcelona showing that multilingual people had predicted brain ages up to 13 years younger than their actual chronological age, based on the same kind of brain scan modeling used in a lot of recent aging research.

The 13 year number is doing a lot of heavy lifting in the headline, because it kinda buries the bigger issue, which is that brain age prediction is still pretty noisy and these models are heavily influenced by the data they were trained on. So I take the "wow" out of it a little, but the general idea that bilingualism keeps your neural circuits more flexible and switches between modes more often does line up with a lot of what we see in cognitive aging research. It tracks for me, my grandma switched between Spanish and English her whole life and stayed sharp into her 90s.

For anyone who has tried picking up a new language as an adult, did you actually notice any cognitive shifts, or did it just feel like memorization? 🧠

  • rachel_ketogen: The grandmother anecdote is what gets me too. Sharp into her 90s is no joke. Brain age models are fun but the inputs really matter, ive seen the predicted age swing like 10 years depending on which model you run the same scan through. So yeah, take the 13 with a whole shaker of salt. I tried duolingo for german a couple years back during a lull and honestly it felt like pure memorization. No switch flipping, no clarity. But i wasnt immersed, just tapping a phone for 5 min before bed. I suspect
  • patient_codes: Yeah honestly I think the app thing is mostly junk for the real cognitive benefit, it's like doing one set of five pound dumbbells and wondering why you aren't jacked lol. My grandma wasn't sitting in a classroom, she was at the grocery store negotiating with the butcher in spanish while her kids answered in english. That's the actual workout for your brain, switching all day without thinking about it.
  • weekendnate: Yeah, immersion is probably the real variable there. Five minutes of tapping a phone before bed is basically just rote review, your brain is not adapting to anything, it is just shuffling flashcards. Real code switching in a noisy restaurant is a different workout entirely. The model variance thing bugs me too. Ten year swings on the same scan tells you the "brain age" number is more of a vibe than a measurement. Probably better to track one model over time than to compare across studies.
