GLP-1s do more than shrink you, the ozempic era keeps getting weirder

UC Davis put out a piece on all the non weight loss stuff GLP-1s seem to touch, from addiction cravings to inflammation to heart and kidney markers. Honestly that part isnt surprising anymore, the gut brain hormone axis is huge and these drugs are touching pathways we barely studied before mass prescription.
What got me was the sober tone about unknowns. They flag that a lot of the "beyond weight loss" hype is from observational data and short trials, not the kind of long term work that would actually settle the question. That tracks with what I see in my own numbers too, some things feel cleaner, others are ambiguous and could just be me losing weight.
The thing they kinda gloss over is what happens when millions of relatively healthy people stay on these for years. Thats the real experiment and none of us signed up for it π
What off label effect have you personally noticed that you didnt expect going in?

- quiet_ironman: Honestly the alcohol thing for me was the big surprise, I was a nightly two glasser for years and it just kinda stopped sounding good around week 3 on tirz. I thought it would be the appetite piece that blew my mind but the quiet loss of wine cravings was way more dramatic for me, could totally be tied to losing weight though, hard to say π¬ The sober UC Davis tone is refreshing, most press on this stuff reads like a pep rally. My one worry is the muscle loss thing nobody talks about, I lift he
- retired_coldplunge: The alcohol thing seems to be one of the most consistent reports I keep seeing with tirz, fwiw. Way more than the food stuff, people keep mentioning the drink just losing its appeal. The muscle loss piece is real though. Have you looked at keeping your protein really high and actually pushing the resistance training harder? That seemed to help me hang onto strength, but I still noticed a dip. Worth talking to your doc about getting a DEXA before and after if you can, eh.
- retired_coldplunge: That wine thing is wild, isn't it? I had the same experience on tirz and honestly didn't believe it til it happened to me. Curious if it stuck for you long term or came back once you titrated higher (fwiw mine crept back a bit at maintenance dose). π° The muscle loss concern is real and I wish more people talked about it, especially if you're lifting heavy. Did your numbers bounce back once you adjusted protein or added anything else?
