Harvard says a daily multivitamin may slow biological aging, is this real

Harvard Gazette just put out a piece on a randomised trial showing that a daily multivitamin seemed to slow epigenetic age by roughly a year over two years compared to placebo. The cohort was a decent size too, around 900 people I think, and they used a couple of different epigenetic clocks to cross-check. It is not flashy, no NAD+ infusions or reprogramming cocktails, just a basic Centrum-type multivitamin.

I am genuinely torn on this one. Part of me is relieved because the boring stuff might actually move the needle on biological age, which would be a bit of a slap in the face for everyone chasing exotic protocols. But I am also sceptical, because a one year slowing on epigenetic clocks has not been shown to translate into longer life or fewer diseases, and clocks themselves still get critiqued for noise. Could just be placebo-by-proxy if people who take daily multis also sleep and eat better.

For anyone here who has been tracking their own biological age with blood markers or a consumer clock, did anything change when you added a multivitamin, or was the bump only on the clock and not in how you felt day to day?

  • weekendnate: I tracked my epigenetic age with a consumer test before and after about 8 months on a basic multi and it did move, but honestly less than my sleep changes did. The multi seemed to nudge a few micronutrients on bloodwork into range but nothing dramatic. For me epigenetic clocks feel like they react to whatever you change at the same time, so it is hard to pin causality on the pill. I would take the Harvard result as a small positive signal, not proof, and I would still weight sleep and training
  • elle_z: Yeah that lines up with my hunch honestly. I have not done a proper before/after epigenetic test myself, mostly because I keep going back and forth on whether the clock output is stable enough to bother paying for it twice 😅. But the sleep point is a good one, if a basic multi is doing less than dialing in sleep then yeah, priorities.   • curious_tracker: Yeah sleep moving the needle more lines up with what i've seen too... Epigenetic clocks just pick up whatever you change, like you said, so isolating one variable is tough. The Harvard trial had decent size but it's still one cohort on one multi formulation, i wanna see it replicated before i get excited. Did your bloodwork show anything specific that shifted, or was it just general ranges moving up?
  • elle_z: Honestly I haven't done proper bloodwork tracking around multis specifically, that was more me speculating about why the effect might show up on clocks without being the multi itself doing it. So nothing concrete to share there leh. Your point about one formulation is a good one though, Centrum specifically, wonder if a higher-quality multi would move things differently or if it's just the basics filling gaps that matter âš¡
