$3 a month generic semaglutide could change the math for millions

Guardian piece on a study showing semaglutide could be manufactured for around three bucks a month in 160 lower and middle income countries. The math isn't surprising if you've seen what API costs look like in India and China, but seeing it spelled out in a peer reviewed model still hits different.
What gets me is the gap between that production cost and what people in the US are paying out of pocket, even with the recent pricing moves. If a month of therapy can be made for the price of a fast food lunch, the current US pricing structure starts to look more like a policy choice than a market outcome. The study also doesn't really touch on cold chain logistics or pen device costs, which is where a lot of the real world expense hides.
