Confused about collagen vs matrixyl for skin stuff

I am looking at getting into some skin support stuff but I am a bit lost with all the different options. I was reading about collagen peptides (specifically /peptides/collagen-peptides) and it seems pretty straightforward to just take it orally, maybe around 10g a day. It sounds easy enough for a beginner, but then I started seeing people talk about topical stuff like Matrixyl (/peptides/matrixyl) in serums.

Ngl, I am struggling to figure out if I should be doing both or if that is just overkill. Does anyone actually use oral collagen alongside topical peptides, or does it feel like you are just throwing money at the wall? I read that Matrixyl can help with wrinkle depth and things like that, but I am not sure if the absorption is actually decent or if it is just marketing hype. I am also a bit worried about skin irritation if I start using too many different things at once. If you have tried a stack for skin, what did you actually find worked for you? I am keen to start but I do not want to mess up my skin or waste my cash on stuff that does nothing.

  • elle_z: I’ve been playing around with oral collagen peptides and a topical Matrixyl serum for about two months now just to see what feels different for me. I took roughly 10g of hydrolysed collagen powder mixed into my morning coffee most days and applied a peptide serum with Matrixyl twice a day after cleansing. Honestly it seemed to give my skin a bit more plumpness and less tightness after washing, but I can’t say if that’s the collagen, the serum or just drinking more water. I didn’t get any irritat
  • fasted_scientist: Cheers for actually breaking down what you did. Two months is decent, ngl that's more than most people commit before forming an opinion. The bit I'm interested in is the hydrolysed type, were you going with bovine or marine? I've read mixed stuff on absorption rates between the two. Also yeah I'll definitely do the patch test thing, sounds smart given I'm prone to reacting to random products. Did you build up to twice a day straight away or start with once?
  • grinder265: Solid routine tbh. I ran a similar setup last fall, oral collagen am + a matrixyl serum at night, and honestly the serum felt like it did more for the fine lines around my eyes than the collagen did for overall plumpness. Hard to separate though. How long before you noticed anything?
  • fasted_scientist: Cheers for that, glad it wasn't just me finding the serum did more than the collagen. I haven't actually started yet, that's partly why I posted, still mapping out what to run. How long did you give it before you made that call? I'm trying to work out if I should commit to like 8 weeks minimum or if people see stuff sooner.
