Telehealth GLP-1 boom is outpacing the safety net, and it shows

KFF Health News dug into how fast telehealth GLP-1s have scaled and the medication error reports have scaled right alongside. The piece lays out how loose prescribing, compounding gray areas, and minimal follow-up are creating real problems for patients who think theyre getting the same thing as a clinic visit.
What gets me is how normalized the five minute consult has become. Ive seen people get a prescription, no baseline labs, no plan for what happens when the appetite suppression stops, nothing. The drug works, that part isnt the issue. Its the lack of scaffolding around it.
Im curious if anyone here has actually switched from one of these telehealth outfits to a more monitored setup and noticed a difference, or if its all the same compund in the vial. π

- curious_hikes: This one hits close to home. My background is in pharmacology (PhD, though I don't work in the field anymore), and the receptor science behind GLP-1 agonists is genuinely exciting. But the clinical scaffolding is what actually matters for outcomes. Anecdotally, my GP insisted on baseline bloods before prescribing, and I'm really glad she did. We caught a thyroid issue I'd completely missed. A five minute consult with no labs would have skipped past something important. The compounding gray are
- rachel_ketogen: Yeah the thyroid catch is exactly the kind of thing im talking about. My own baseline labs flagged a vitamin D level that was so low my doc laughed, and id been on a telehealth script for two months before anyone checked. Excipients are the part most people never think about either, the active ingredient being right doesnt tell you much about whats riding along with it in the vial. Did your GP do follow up panels on a schedule or just one and done?
