Can someone explain what a SGLT2 inhibitor actually does in plain english?

So i keep seeing canagliflozin pop up in longevity threads and i honestly have no idea what it is doing in the body. The kidney glucose excretion thing makes sense on paper but i want to understand it like im a regular person. Like why would someone who isnt diabetic even bother with it?
Is it just for the weight loss effect or is there more going on? Also the dehydration and yeast infection warnings kind of freak me out ngl. Has anyone here actually tried it and felt a real difference in energy or recovery, or is it more of a bloodwork improvement kind of thing where you dont feel much day to day?
I read the profile on this site but i still feel like im missing the why. Kindly break it down for me if you can?

- leah_m: Simplest way I can put it: your kidneys normally grab glucose back from your pee and put it back in your blood. SGLT2 inhibitors block that recycling, so you pee out some glucose instead. Less glucose circulating, less insulin needed, maybe less metabolic wear and tear over time. That's the longevity angle lah. I tried canagliflozin briefly out of curiosity. Honestly didn't feel much day to day. Maybe slightly less afternoon sluggishness but could be nothing. The yeast infection risk is real th

And did you notice anything on bloodwork after, like fasting glucose or anything? I've been tempted to mess with it for the metabolic angle but the yeast thing in this heat is a real turn off 👀

Blood glucose did come down on my cgm, like fasting dropped from low 100s to high 80s, and i did feel a bit lighter in the first 2 weeks but that leveled off. Honestly the peeing was annoying more than anything, kept getting up at night and i drink a lot of water anyway so it was just constant. I didnt get a yeast infection but i can see how it would happen, especially if someone is running it in summer like you are, no? For me th

So basically forcing the kidneys to be lazy about reabsorbing it, and the body has to use fat for some of its energy needs instead?
