Brazilian researchers try a peptide approach for parkinson's, early but interesting

Came across this one from news-medical about a team at UNIFESP (here in são paulo actually, no?) working on a peptide strategy to protect the dopaminergic neurons that die off in parkinson's. The concept seems to be using a peptide to somehow shield or support those cells rather than just throwing dopamine at the problem later, which honestly feels like a smarter angle to me.
What caught my eye is that it's preclinical still, so everything is "may" and "could" and mouse models at this point. Fwiw i always get nervous when parkinson's research gets framed as a near-cure, because the jump from rodents to humans is where a lot of these strategies quietly fall apart. Still, anything coming out of a brazilian lab with a mechanism-based approach is worth watching, since most of the bigger parkinson's headlines i've seen are either about L-DOPA tweaks or stem cells.
Does anyone here actually follow the preclinical parkinson's peptide literature, or is it mostly wait-and-see until human data drops? 🧬

Im also more interested when someone goes after neuron survival itself instead of just replacing dopamine after the fact, that part of the logic tracks with me. - quiet_mom: Yeah exactly, going after neuron survival vs just patching symptoms later is what makes these preclinical things worth watching even if most don't pan out. To be fair the brazilian groups have been putting out some neat cell-penetrating scaffolds lately. You ever look at how those compare to GDNF's delivery problems? That's where my eyes glaze out...
