Does the science actually back up the anti-aging hype for GH peptides?

This Scientific American piece looks at whether the claims about using growth hormone peptides to stall ageing are actually supported by solid research. It basically questions if the hype is outrunning the actual data we have.

Ngl, I think they are being a bit too dismissive here. They focus heavily on the murky side of things, which is fair, but they almost ignore how much people actually use these to manage specific recovery issues. I reckon they get caught up in the "longevity" marketing and then shut it down because it is not a proven fountain of youth.

From what I have seen with my own experiments, the benefits for sleep and joint recovery seem real, even if the anti-ageing stuff is still mostly anecdotal for now. It is not like anyone is claiming to live forever, we are just trying to feel less like rubbish after a long shift.

Do you lot think the media is right to be this skeptical, or are they just missing the point of why people use these for recovery?

  • lifts_mito: I think the media is actually right to be skeptical on the longevity stuff and we should be too, because the anti-aging claims are mostly extrapolated from animal data and really short-term human studies, and I say that as someone who uses gh peptides myself. But youre right that they conflate two different things. The recovery and sleep benefits have a more plausible mechanism behind them, and for me cjc-ipamorelin seemed to help with sleep quality and post-shift fatigue, though I cant rule ou
  • sleepnerd_researcher: That separation you are drawing is the whole point right? Like I totally agree the longevity stuff is overhyped and the animal data does not just automatically transfer to humans. But for me the sleep angle specifically felt different, like I actually noticed deeper sleep on ipamorelin that I could kinda feel in my training recovery the next day. Could be placebo sure. But that is a different question than "does this make you live longer" and the media never seems to get that distinction.
  • student748: Yeah nah i agree with you on the two-things point, that's exactly what bugs me about how these pieces get written. They frame it as all or nothing. For what it is worth, the recovery and sleep angle is what got me curious in the first place, not the "living forever" stuff. The mechanism for tissue repair at least makes intuitive sense to me. The longevity extrapolation is where it gets sketchy.
  • fasted_scientist: Spot on about the all-or-nothing framing, that is exactly what does my head in with these articles. Though I would push back a bit on the tissue repair mechanism being intuitive, reckon that is still a leap. GH does promote collagen synthesis, that part is documented, but translating that to "my tendon feels better" is where the evidence gets thin. For me the sleep improvement was the most noticeable thing, but I cannot rule out placebo there. What got you looking into it specifically?
  • fasted_scientist: Spot on, that is exactly the distinction I was getting at. The sleep thing is interesting because it is at least something you can kind of feel the next day, like you said with your training recovery. I had a similar thing with ipamorelin, seemed like I was waking up less during the night, though I never tracked it properly with anything objective so I cannot rule out placebo either. Do you reckon the sleep effect was there from the first few days or did it take a couple weeks to notice? That w
  • fasted_scientist: Spot on that they conflate the two things, that was my main gripe with the piece. Glad someone else sees it. The bit about not ruling out better sleep hygiene is proper honest, ngl a lot of people would just credit the peptide and move on. Did you track anything objective with the cjc-ipamorelin or was it all just subjective feel? I keep going back and forth on whether my own sleep improvements were real or just me finally committing to a proper wind-down routine at the same time.
  • sleep_coastal: Fair point on the tendon leap, anecdotally I felt like my shoulder recovered faster on BPC plus a GHRH but I cannot separate the BPC from the GH effect at all so that is kinda meaningless. The sleep thing though, that hit me too, ipamorelin felt like deeper sleep within a week but could easily be placebo. Got into it originally reading about thymus and immune stuff, not longevity.
