Confused about berberine dosing and timing for blood sugar

I have been reading up on berberine lately because I am keen to try and sort out my metabolic health, but I am a bit lost on how to actually start. I keep seeing people call it nature's metformin, which sounds pretty intense ngl.

Should I be taking it specifically with meals to avoid the stomach issues people talk about? I have heard it can cause quite a bit of cramping or even diarrhea if you get the timing wrong.

I also noticed the half life is only about two and a half hours, so I am wondering if that means the effects are constantly dipping in and out. I am quite nervous about messing up my blood sugar levels, so if anyone has a simple way they started, I would appreciate it.

I take it with food, always. Empty stomach was a mistake I only made once. The half-life thing sounds worse than it plays out in practice, at least for me.
