Reconstitution math for beginners

Reckon some of you might have seen me around but i am still trying to nail the basics on the math side of things. I have a chemistry background so the theory is easy but actually doing it with a tiny insulin syringe is a different story.
I am seeing heaps of protocols online but the way they write the doses is all over the shop. Some people talk about mcg and others use mg and it is easy to slip up if you are not paying attention. Anecdotally i have felt way too jittery on a couple of things because i think i miscalculated the volume of bacteriostatic water i added to the vial.
If you are just starting out do you just use a calculator app or do you have a specific way of writing it down so you do not mess it up? I am keen to get a system that is foolproof because making a mistake with the dose is the last thing i want. No worries if you have a simple formula you use to figure out the units per dose. Just want to make sure i am not overdoing it.
