Berberine and My Blood Sugar Monitoring – What Worked and What Didn’t

I started berberine 500 mg three times daily a month ago, timing the doses with breakfast, lunch and dinner. I’ve kept a log of my fasting glucose, insulin and HRV each morning. After the first week I saw a drop of about 5 mg/dL in my fasting glucose and a 4 % rise in HRV, which felt encouraging. By week four the glucose plateaued around 4.8 mmol/L, and HRV was steady at 55–58 ms. Unfortunately, I began having mild cramping and a loose stool after meals, which I think is the GI upset the package mentions. I’ve tried splitting the dose into two smaller intakes, but the relief has been marginal.

I’d like to know if anyone else has measured these numbers with berberine and what their tolerance was. Did you find a sweet spot for dose frequency or timing that helped minimise the tummy issues? I’m also curious about whether adding a low dose of amlexanox (around 25 mg three times daily) helped with energy levels, as I’ve read it may boost thermogenesis. Any data or anecdotes would be appreciated.

  • practicalluis: i’m not a medical professional but from my own tracking i’ve had similar issues. for me 500 mg thrice a day at meals caused cramps and loose stools after about three weeks, so i cut back to 300 mg twice a day, early and late, and the GI symptoms cleared while the glucose and HRV trends stayed steady. ngl the pattern of improved HRV was helpful. i’ve never tried amlexanox; the literature is sparse and the energy lift i’ve seen in others might be placebo or a mild thermogenic effect. would love t
  • gina150: Thanks for the details; I’ll try 300 mg twice a day – early and late – as you did. My HRV sits around 56–58 ms and fasting glucose at 4.8 mmol/L, so I’ll see if the lower dose keeps those steady while easing the gut. Did you notice any difference in glucose or HRV when you moved the second dose to late evening?
