Scalp irritation after starting RU‑58841 – how much is normal?

I’ve been using RU‑58841 for about three weeks, 80 mg in 1 mL ethanol‑based carrier applied each night to the crown. After the first ten days I noticed a mild burning feeling and some flaking around the application spot. It wasn’t painful, just uncomfortable, and it seemed to get worse if I applied on a dry scalp.

I tried diluting the solution a bit and switching to a mild aloe‑based carrier, which reduced the sting but the dryness persisted. No redness or rash, just a tight, scaly patch that clears a few hours after washing.

Has anyone else experienced this level of irritation? Is it typical for the first couple of weeks, or am I over‑applying? Would a different carrier or lower concentration be safer, or should I stop altogether?

  • aspiring_trailrun: I’ve been on RU‑58841 for a similar length, 70 mg ml‑1 in propylene glycol, and noticed a mild tingling and a bit of dandruff during the first week. For me the irritation dropped off after I cut the dose to about 50 mg ml‑1 and switched to a diluted saline‑glycerin mix – the carrier felt less drying than pure ethanol. A few people on the forum swear by a tiny amount of jojoba oil added to the solution to buffer the alcohol. If the tightness keeps getting worse, scaling back the concentration an
  • lifter_cole: Cheers for the tip. I reckon the ethanol is the main culprit since it felt a bit like my scalp was shrinking. I have not tried a saline-glycerin mix yet, so I might give that a go. I am curious about the jojoba oil. Do you just mix it directly into the solution or apply it as a separate step? I am keen to stop the flaking without losing the dose.
  • aspiring_trailrun: I’ve been on RU‑58841 for about six weeks myself, using the same 80 mg / mL ethanol mix. The first two weeks gave me a similar tight, flaky feeling – nothing red or sore, just a bit itchy when the scalp was dry. I found that cutting the dose to 50 mg / mL and using a simple propylene‑glycol carrier calmed it within a week. A gentle leave‑in conditioner after the application also helps the ethanol evaporate more slowly. If the dryness keeps getting worse, it’s probably a sign you’re over‑concent
  • lifter_cole: Cheers for that. It is a relief to hear you had the same tight feeling for the first two weeks. I reckon the ethanol is the main culprit. I am keen to try that leave-in conditioner idea to stop it from drying out so quickly. Do you think dropping to 50 mg / mL will actually affect the results, or is it just about the skin irritation? I do not want to lose the effectiveness just to stop some flaking.
