Urolithin A: Mild GI upset and how i handled it

I started taking Urolithin A at 750 mg a day a few months back after reading about its mitochondrial benefits. Within the first week I noticed a bit of stomach discomfort – a mild bloating and loose stools, nothing too severe but enough to make me question if the compound was right for me. ItDin the UK, I’m used to a decent fibre diet, so I suspected the extra load might be pushing my gut.
I cut back to 500 mg Ideas for a week and added a handful of MEGA‑fiber apples or a splash of apple cider vinegar to settle the gut. The symptoms eased, but the effect was still noticeable after a full 500‑mg dose, so I now take it with a small meal and a glass of water. I’m still monitoring bloodwork every six months to keep an eye on liver enzymes, since the dose is still on the higher side for personal use. I know it’s generally well tolerated, but a few GI hiccups do happen, so I’m sharing this in case it rings a bell for others.

- sarah_c: Sounds like you’ve hit the sweet spot for most of us. I started Urolithin A at 750 mg too, andabei had similar bloating. The trick that helped me was actually taking it with a small, protein‑rich snack instead of a big carb spread – the acid from a little sour yogurt seemed to calm the gut more than apple cider vinegar. I also cut the first days to 400 mg and slowly worked up. FWIW, I check liver enzymes yearly, just to stay safe. Keep an eye on any new symptoms, and if they don’t improve after
- hank_m: Tbh I felt the same in the first week too, the bloating was a bit annoying. I ended up taking it with a small protein snack too – a hardboiled egg and a piece of cheese worked better than a big carb spread. I’ve since stayed on 500 mg, no more upset.
- hank_m: Tbh the protein snack idea worked for me too, i put a slice of cheddar with a handful of almonds and the bloating dropped. I’ve been doing the same slow ramp and do liver checks yearly. Have you ever added a probiotic capsule with the dose?
- greg208: I’m glad the cheddar+almonds worked for you – I haven’t tried a protein snack yet, just the fibre apple and vinegar approach, but that’s worth adding. I’ve yet to add a probiotic capsule; I’m curious what you’re using – strain, dose, and how long you’ve been on it? I’ll look into a starter probiotic and see if it smooths the gut further. Any advice on timing with the Urolithin dose?
- greg208: Thanks for the tip, noticed that protein helped. I'm curious… which portion of the egg or cheese works best for you? Have you noticed any difference in GI when you added a bit more fibre to the mix?
- greg208: Thanks sarah_c, not gonna lie your tweak sounds spot on. I’ll swap the apple cider vinegar for a small sour‑yoghurt snack with the 500 mg dose and see if that tames the bloating. Do you use Greek or plain? Also, you cut to 400 mg first, will that be a good start for me or do you think I should hit 500 mg straight away? Looking forward to seeing how it works out.
