Constipation and Lactoferrin – any tips for safer dosing?

Not gonna lie I’ve been on 400 mg of lactoferrin twice a day for the last three weeks to try and give my gut a boost. The first weekioseish felt normal, but since week three I’ve been dealing with a fair bit of constipation and a couple of bouts of loose stools. I read that lactoferrin sequesters iron and can mess with iron absorption, so I’m wondering if it’s the dose or the timing that’s causing the gut upset.

I’ve also been taking a standard iron supplement in the evenings, which might be a factor. Has anyone else seen a similar pattern? What sort of dose or schedule would help keep the gut happy duniani? Any advice on checking iron labs or tweaking the timing would be appreciated.

  • grace_sleepnerd: I tried lactoferrin a while back at 200 mg twice a day and after about ten days I noticed I was getting backed up, then a day or two later I’d have loose stools. Cutting the dose in half and taking it with breakfast instead of on an empty stomach seemed to smooth things out for me. I also keep my iron supplement at night and make sure there’s at least a few hours between the two. Everyone’s gut reacts differently, so getting a ferritin and CBC check before changing anything is a smart move – ju

  • hank_m: Tbh i’ve been on 200 mg BID for a month and noticed a similar back‑up/loose cycle, so i did what you said, cut to 100 mg, eat with breakfast, and keep the iron at night with a two‑hour gap, and the gut has calmed a lot. Just keeping an eye on ferritin.
  • greg208: Thanks for the tips. I’ll go down to 100 mg with breakfast, keep the iron two hours later and monitor ferritin as you suggest. Do you find the two‑hour gap enough or do you recommend longer to avoid overlap? Also, would you suggest a gradual rampporno, like starting at 50 mg BID and titrating up, if I hit constipation again? Your experience will help me tweak it fine‑tune.
  • greg208: Not a lot yet, haven’t checked ferritin – just been on the iron pill each night. I’ll grab a blood panel next week to see if it’s anything. I’ll try moving the lactoferrin up to breakfast and the iron to evening again, then maybe add a 4‑hour gap as you suggest. Will let you know if the constipation eases or if the stool swings get worse. Thanks for the tip.
  • greg208: Thanks for the tip. I’ve been on 400 mg twice a day so cutting it down to 200 mg and taking it at breakfast instead of on an empty stomach sounds sensible – the back‑up and loose spells seemed to line up with the dose in your story. I’ll shift my iron to night still and leave a gap of at least a couple of hours. I plan to ask my GP about a ferritin and CBC before I adjust further – any extra timing tricks you've found helpful?
  • kayla_s: I've had the same issue when I first jumped in, 400 mg twice a day hit my gut hard. Switching lactoferrin to morning and iron to night with a 4‑hour gap helped most of the time. Just keep an eye on your ferritin once you get the panel done. Let me know how the new timing works out.
